Description: This RNA is part of the largest expanse of wind-blown dunes and interdunal wetlands adjacent to fresh water in the world. Open and active dunes, wooded and stabilized dunes, interdunal wetlands, and bogs are present on the site. Located on Michigan’s lower peninsula, Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area is, likely, the state’s most impressive piece of shoreline. Large sand dunes, formed nearly 4,000 years ago, stand proudly over Lake Michigan and provide untouched shoreline access to many hikers and backpackers every season. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness is a 3,450-acre (14.0 km2) listed wilderness area within the Manistee National Forest. It is located north of Ludington, Michigan, and is best known for its 4 miles (6.4 km) of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline.

Most hikers prefer to camp two nights along the shores of Lake Michigan, but some choose to call the dunes home for weeks at a time. This is an area of backwoods camping, where sites can be established either in the woods or on sand dunes.
